Surgeons know that having the proper tools readily available can be crucial to the job being performed. As a videographer, it is necessary for you to come prepared with everything you need.

Before going to the set for production, you should create a list of what's needed. Of course, you'll need to take the usual items, along with any special equipment needed for the project. Here are the basic needs for production.

Video
You won't be getting too far in production without your camera. Make sure to bring along batteries and chargers to ensure that nothing dies. It's a good idea to charge up batteries the night before. Power up your camera to see if all of its features are working properly (zoom, white balance, focus, etc). Don't be too much in a rush to where you forget to turn it off. Seems simple enough, but many videographers forget that one step and leave the production with a dead camera. Pre-set the lighting, so that when you get to your indoor or outdoor location, you can hit the ground running.

Before leaving for the production, you should also pre-label the tapes; this will free up time that would have been consumed labeling them later on. Also, bring along a tripod and camera mount.

Audio
Test your hand-held and/or wireless microphones through the camera; this will give you a preview of what you'll be hearing when you begin recording. Now you can see what parts are missing and what's needed to get everything working properly. Bring along a fresh pair of batteries and listen on a good pair of quality headsets.

Do some testing on the headphones you decide to bring along. Make sure there are no distortions or audio drops. If there are any problems during the check up, try to fix them before the production begins. If you are bringing along your boom, make sure there is someone there to operate it. Even if there isn't anyone who will operate the boom, you can possibly rig a C-stand to hold it. This won't cut it if you'll be moving about a lot.

Lighting
Your light kit should contain extra bulbs, lamps and extension cables. You should bring at least one extension cable for each light that you take with you. Having a multi-plug power strip can also come in handy for bundling together smaller electrical items.

It's a good idea to pack an emergency bag that has ground lifters (electrical adapters that go from 3 prong to 2 prong), light socket adapter and 3 way adapter that changes any adapter into 3 outlets. If you feel anything else is needed for emergency purposes, include them.
