The Global Positioning System, widely known as a GPS, was exclusively used by US troops to navigate, to target bombs, and to guide on-board missiles. This system was great at giving troops an upper hand.

However, an incident in 1983 made GPS available to the public. Now, it is being utilized worldwide for navigation, map-making, and even for hobbies such as geocaching.

Due to the extended use of the Global Positioning System, various signal receiving devices have appeared on the market. Now the question that is being asked is "Which device suites your needs?"

More often than not, people would use their GPS device while they were on foot. Some would probably put in their cars, boat, or bikes. Some people would probably plan to just carry them around while doing some outdoor activities like, trekking, hiking or hunting. For these various uses, one should look into several criteria before purchasing one.

For outdoor activities, one may be looking for a handheld GPS system. What people should look for in this type of device is a feature capable of pinpointing their locations to within 10 feet from where they are staying. This feature is known as the Wide Area Augmentation System. Besides this capability, the handheld device to be chosen must be weather proof. One wouldn't want to be stranded somewhere with a non-functional GPS device.

GPS systems to be installed in a car need not to be light or weatherproof. The size and the brightness of the GPS device display should be given more importance though. Remember that people should not take their eyes off the road. So they shouldn't purchase a GPS device that is small and so dark that it distracts them.

Moreover, the GPS device should have a street mapping feature. This would allow them to easily navigate through unfamiliar places. In addition, people should also look for a device featuring an external antenna compatibility so they can easily pick up satellite signals while they are on the move.

GPS systems are also useful in a marine environment. However, it is absolutely important that the device is weatherproof and capable of marine mapping and back tracking. It should also contain an active sonar, which would allow the user to detect and identify objects and their locations underwater.

Of course, there are also features that all GPS systems should have. First, they should have a 12 channel receiver system which will allow the user to receive the necessary signals despite obstacles such as heavy tree coverage and tall buildings.

All should have long-lasting battery life as well as trans-reflective color screens for better displays. It allows you to see the display even under intense sunlight. Moreover, this type of screen prolongs the battery life.

There are so many GPS system devices available on the market. Each of them has their own unique features for better functionality. So, make sure that you carefully consider your needs before buying one.
