When a GPS auto tracker is installed on a vehicle it will allow that vehicle to be tracked in real time. The unit will transmit speed, direction, and location. This tracking can be done by the owner, or a contracted service that installs these units and monitors them for businesses and individuals.

A GPS auto tracker system uses the Global Positioning System components inside the gadget to precisely measure vehicles location. Higher end systems merge a communications element such as cellular or satellite transmitters to identify the information and inform a remote monitoring location. This information can then be viewed in the format of electronic maps on your computer with the help of the Internet.

Presently one of the largest users of this technology is shipping companies. Due to tight restraints on product deliveries, and just in time manufacturing policies, many companies with large numbers of vehicles in their fleets use a GPS auto tracker on their units. They can easily identify where a shipment is and relay that information to an anxious customer.

These systems are becoming more common in our own personal vehicles too. They are used to identify driver performance as well as retrieving stolen vehicles. Police are able to follow a signal sent out by a tracking system enabling them to locate a stolen vehicle.

Although it may be a Big Brother is Watching scenario, some parents use them to monitor their children's driving habits. Ouch! Glad they didn't have them when I was driving my parent's car or truck. But if their children ever got into trouble they could also easily locate them so help can be arranged.

Vehicle tracking systems operate at a reasonable cost, as Global Positioning Systems technology is free to the public. The cost is for a unit and monitoring if you need that.

Most providers charge a monthly fee that will cover the installation of any necessary hardware, mapping information, and delivery of that information to the customer.

There are both passive and active tracker units available on the market. A passive unit is installed and accessible for the life of a vehicle. It can be accessed when needed. An active unit provides continual immediate data so fleet managers can keep track of every piece of their distribution puzzle.

In the near future every vehicle will have GPS auto tracking installed.
