If you've ever been confused about digital camera technology, you aren't alone. In today's market for digital cameras, consumers can choose from hundreds of models that have different features and components. Not surprisingly, however, there is much uniformity among the various models.

You are probably familiar with the standard point and shoot cameras. These cameras are designed for consumers who do not necessarily possess an expertise in digital technology. Their functionality involves placement of the camera in front of the desired subject and then taking a snapshot of that subject. Most of these cameras have auto focusing, making it simple to capture a specific subject. Some also contain zoom features, making it possible to capture images from a considerable distant.

Point and shoot cameras have evolved since their original creation. Today, manufacturers have taken full advantage of the technological enhancements in the consumer electronics industry. Consumers now have the option of purchasing digital point and shoot cameras. While these cameras operate in a similar manner, they allow the user to view the image on a liquid crystal display screen prior to taking the snapshot. In addition, users can view the image after taking it to determine whether they want to keep it. Like the original point and shoot cameras, digital point and shoot cameras have various features, including zoom and auto focusing. However, with digital units, users can perform various editing features to reformat a picture to its desired condition.

In contrast to point and shoot cameras, point-of-view cameras literally provide a completely different perspective. With these cameras, the lens is similarly connected to a recording unit that is sometimes attached via cable. These cameras are designed for outdoor use so they are much sturdier than regular point and shoots; able to withstand rain, dirt and vibrations that would destroy an ordinary camera. Another difference is the special mounts that come with these cameras. The whole purpose of these types of cameras is to produce an image from the perspective of the subject holding the camera. If you've ever played a first-person shooter video game, such as Goldeneye or Halo, the type of viewpoint in the game is similar to the perspective provided by point-of-view cameras.

How does one use a point-of-view camera? For the most part, these cameras are used by action sports people who enjoy traveling and capturing every minute of their sport. Point-of-view cameras are usually sold in kits that contain not only the camera but several accessories as well. For instance, most kits come with various clips and connectors so that users can attach the lens to a certain object, such as a helmet, bicycle, surfboard or other gear leaving the operator's hands free to participate in their sport. These accessories help users provide a completely personal perspective of their experience.

The primary differences between point and shoot cameras and point-of-view cameras are their durability, (many are waterproof) and hands free operation due to the different mounting options available for attaching the camera to anything from helmets or sports gear to automobiles. Users have the option of pointing the lens in a certain direction, which then transmits the electronic signal to the connected viewing screen. The advanced technology of point-of-view cameras does not come at a premium. These so called "helmet cams" compare favorably to similar megapixel point and shoot cameras. Point and shoot cameras can start at as low as $100, while point-of-view camera kits generally start around $120 and scale up as video quality and features go up, the same as regular cameras.
