Have you ever had to deal with a computer that does not keep the correct time? Have you ever had a machine that you had to change the time and date every time you turned it on? If this is the case, you probably have a dead bios clock battery. In this article, I will explain how to fix this little nuisance of a problem.

In order for the BIOS system to keep time, it needs a little battery. Once this battery dies, your clock will need to be set for date and time every time you boot. I dont know about you, but for me if a computer cant keep the correct date and time, then I cannot manage my files. Sometimes I have to search and find a file by the date and time that it was modified.

This type of computer repair is pretty easy to do and does not require a whole lot of time. The first thing that you want to do is disconnect the CPU box from the power outlet. Then disconnect all other wires such as keyboard, mouse, display, sound, network etc. Then you want to move the CPU to a comfortable area where you can open it up. Open the CPU box. Somewhere on the mother board you will find a battery that is close to the size of a nickel. That is the battery that we want to replace. You can find replacement batteries at stores like Kmart, Walmart, Target, Radio Shack etc. This little battery should not cost you more than 6 dollars.

For some computers, you may have to remove components to be able to access the BIOS battery area. Make sure that you take the necessary precautions against static electricity such as using a kit, or touching the case to ground yourself during this operation. Now, you want to pop the old battery out using a small flathead. Throw the old battery away so that we dont get it confused with the new one. Take the new one out of its package and insert it into the battery slot.

Install the components that you removed in order to get access to the battery. Make sure that everything is connected. Close the CPU case. Connect it back to the power, keyboard, mouse, display, network, sound etc. When you boot up the machine, go into the BIOS and set the clock. Save your changes, and let the machine do its re-start. When you get into you operating system, check its clock to make sure that its time, date and time zone are correct. When you save files in windows, the system uses the time and date from that clock.

And folks, there you have it. Your computer should now be able to keep time without you having to change the clock every time you boot the system. This computer repair is similar to changing a watch battery.
