The widespread application of eLearning and computer based training has made great strides over the last thirty years or so. For one thing, course creators have sharpened their skills and the quality of the courses available is surprisingly good. Today's teachers and course designers just as today's students have grown up with personal computers, video games, and digital media so they are familiar with them and are quite adept at using them.

Another factor that has contributed to the surge in computer based learning is the expansion of the internet that has taken place over the last 15 years. It doesn't matter whether training courses are being offered by an employer, a trade association, or a university thousands of miles away. They're accessible via the internet in exactly the same way. The result is that eLearning makes it possible to save time, money, and other resources at the same time as freeing students to learn at their own pace and on their own schedule.

Today the eLearning industry is worth billions of dollars. In many business settings, eLearning has become the industry standard when it comes to ongoing training, but even traditional schools and universities offer courses where students can study online with virtually no instructor input.

The advantages of this kind of computer based learning are fairly obvious once you have experienced it in action. Instructors are freed up from day to day presentation of the materials to work on development and course content. Students do not have to spend time traveling back and forth to a physical location. Course instruction can take place at any time of the day or night. Students can work at their own pace, and so on. Students can participate through video and audio streaming, online discussion groups, live virtual classes and chat groups, just to name a few of the technologies used in computer based learning.

Instructors involved in elearning have had to learn new skills also. Not only must they be fully trained from the academic perspective, but they must learn new teaching techniques and course development skills. They must also be completely proficient in the way computers and the internet work, because these technologies are at the heart of virtually all elearning.

As a result, a student today will encounter eLearning at virtually every phase of his or her years in school. From the earliest years in elementary school computer based learning is being applied to teaching basic skills and subject matters. This has made it is possible for a person to encounter eLearning throughout their university career, from simple online classes to doctoral programs from some of the top universities in the world.

The application of eLearning technologies and methods to business has expanded tremendously too. In fact the use of computer based learning allows companies to create ongoing educational programs that give all employees the opportunity to expand their horizons and advance their skills. Businesses and other types of organizations can now offer their personnel ongoing learning opportunities that eliminate the need to send out instructors who must travel to diverse locations and time zones. The challenge is to develop a proper learning solution and develop the goals needed to educate and train vendors, customers, partners, and employees.
